Beyond: Tadao Ando and Art

Beyond: Tadao Ando and Art

Tadao Ando's first large-scale art-based solo exhibition, "Beyond: Tadao Ando and Art," is a retrospective of his life, divided into three major chapters - "Beyond Art", "Beyond Light" and "Beyond Ando" leading visitors to discover his artistic thinking and creativity from a new perspective.

Preface

We are living in an unprecedented era of high speed, and the "digital revolution" has given a major boost to globalization. However, the outbreak of a massive epidemic has brought a rapidly changing world to a halt. Where does the future of humanity lie? Who can accurately predict it? In the midst of such chaos, the traditional mode of thinking, which pursues short-term benefits, should be unsustainable, right? We should get rid of the shackles of traditional thinking, start from the root of things, and ask ourselves "What is the happiness of human beings? and "What should the world be like?"

Perhaps only art can answer this question. It stimulates people's inner creativity, free thinking, breaking boundaries, and finally making a difference. That's the meaning of art's existence!

Being in the museum, which is a building with many artistic treasures, I do my best to make it strong and rich. The exhibition "Beyond" will break the boundaries between architecture and art and return to the original point, introducing the artworks that I have worked alongside and that have had an indelible impact on my life. These works of art will be integrated into the architecture of the museum, and through the design of the space again, the creative energy of the artists will be maximized, and together we will express the "discovery beyond what we see", and the spirit of "transcendence" will be understood and brought into play in the "light of hope". The spirit of "transcendence" is expressed in the "light of hope".

Exhibition Chapters

The first chapter, "Beyond Art," features the works of ten masters who have intersected with his life and influenced his work, including Pablo Picasso, Ellsworth Kelly, Hiroshi Sugimoto, and others. The dialogue between space and artwork is designed and reinterpreted in a tailor-made way, using space to reward art and architecture to transcend art.

Space of Light

Tadao Ando and Esvoz Kelley

"In the 1950s, the most radical period of Abstract Expressionism, I was alone in my inner introspection, bursting into a meditative world, and carried on with this gesture throughout my life. Quiet yet eloquent, the ideal of Minimalism was here."  -- Tadao Ando

Cubism in Space

Tadao Ando and Pablo Picasso

"Living in turbulent times and never losing his wildness until the end, leading the times all the way, this is the strongest modern artist of all time, Pablo Picasso. In the presence of this work, I feel the power of emotion, violence and the instinct to confide in human beings in common." -- Tadao Ando

The Space of Calm

Tadao Ando and Hiroshi Sugimoto

"On the other side of the wall, there is an endless 'sea'. It reminds people of the world that cannot be seen with the naked eye, and speaks of the things inside people. This is also my ideal form of architecture, and Hiroshi Sugimoto has beautifully and masterfully realized this ideal by means of photography."  -- Tadao Ando

In the process of communication and meeting with artists, his creative potential was greatly stimulated, and he gradually found an important medium for his own artistic expression - "light". In the second chapter, "Beyond Light," visitors will follow this light as he explores the trajectory of his use of light in his art, including his journey through the influence of architect Le Corbusier. The second chapter, "Beyond Light," explores his artistic trajectory through the use of light, including rare manuscripts and images created after his European explorations influenced by architect Le Corbusier, as well as the artistic space of light and shadow constructed by returning to the geometric point of origin.

The final chapter of the exhibition, "Beyond Ando", will enter into the spiritual world he created across various fields, presenting his works in different media such as wood, glass and photography, including ANDO BOX, which combines his manuscripts and photography using platinum printing technology. Surrounded by giant images of Naoshima, visitors will be able to appreciate the spirit of Tadao Ando's continuous reflection on the relationship between nature and human beings.
