Overview

He Art Museum is pleased to present “Guided by Light to the Sublime,” solo exhibition of Chinese artist Wang Yuanyuan, on view from July 10, 2026. Through a series of recent paintings, the exhibition invites the audience into interwoven and petrified landscapes scattered in the artist’s memory, shared habitats in dreams beyond reach, surrounded by antique objects and dappled light.

All things rest in stillness, till light descends to bring them into view. It reveals the world in its entirety, embodying the vital rhythm of heaven and earth, while serving as a medium through which the world enlightens us. Light calls forth the hidden contours of all beings, leading us into deeper dimensions of existence. Wang Yuanyuan’s contemplation of light and objects unfolds gradually. Rooted in personal life experience, his practice also touches upon the shared longing for a spiritual homeland that has lingered in humanity for ages.

To be “Guided by Light” is not to chase dazzling splendor, but to attune our sensitivity to the subtle shifts of light and shadow, opening a path into the depths of the soul. “To the Sublime” means no indulgence in mere spectacles, but an invitation to perceive the transcendence inherent in ordinary objects. The silent mystery of the world ceases to be a form of solitude; it transforms into a moment of quiet anticipation for spiritual illumination. As Simone Weil put it: The silence of the world is not a void, and true spiritual activity is not seeking, but waiting.

This captures the meditative moments woven into Wang’s works, as he ponders the tension between eternity and transience. Works such as Garden of Light, Qiu Ying’s Chamber and The Wangchuan Scroll echo his profound reflections on individual and collective human existence. Some inquiries transcend all eras—a timeless “classical” spirit dwelling in every soul’s quest, much like the sacred light that reveals all things.
