Pu Yingwei:New Century Encyclopedia

Overview

In light of anti-globalization and the ever-changing world, Pu Yingwei has been exploring whether a possible way of communication exists between different civilizations. In his artistic practice, he unveils a unique version of the cosmopolitan spirit as a Chinese artist, thereby a global narrative oriented toward himself is formed.

Global travel has become his method of interrogating the current world order. From 2021 to 2023, departing from China, Pu traveled through London and Paris to Eastern Europe, Africa and Central Asia. He visited monuments from the former Yugoslavia, art institutions, slums, and Chinese construction teams in Kenya. The journey ended in the conflict zone of Kyiv. Through these experiences across regions, climates and ideologies, Pu further expanded his “world experience.” The journey also inspired the concept of “world art” which he advocated in this exhibition.

His latest creations following this global travel, including the animated short film New World Encyclopedia, the ceramic sculpture World Library, and the painting series Today’s Changing Seasons, all aim to showcase the universality of knowledge and values by integrating different artistic styles, blurring the boundaries of space and time. This is Pu Yingwei's personal archive offered to the future — a future of openness and inclusivity.
